You arrive in Nice with the Mediterranean on one side and the grand hotels of the Promenade des Anglais on the other. The Hotel Ruhl was built for exactly that kind of Riviera escape — afternoons along the waterfront, evenings out, with plenty of time devoted to seeing and being seen. This wonderfully graphic circa-1930 luggage label comes from that world, when a stay on the Côte d'Azur was an occasion worth touting on your suitcase.

Opened in 1913, the Hotel Ruhl was one of Nice's great luxury hotels, occupying a prime position on the Promenade des Anglais. The original hotel was demolished in 1970, making surviving pieces of its travel ephemera a colorful reminder of a Riviera landmark that has disappeared.
