A vintage piece of French Riviera travel history.
You've come to the Riviera for the summer — which, until recently, wasn't really something people did. Days are spent swimming, sailing and disappearing along the coast; evenings bring everyone back together for dinner, drinks and whatever happens next. Writers, painters and other expatriates seem to keep turning up. It feels less like a hotel season than the beginning of an unforgettable novel.
Originally conceived as a retreat for writers, the Grand Hôtel du Cap opened in 1870 and was transformed into a luxury hotel by Antoine Sella in the late 19th century. In 1923, American expatriates Gerald and Sara Murphy rented the hotel for the summer, helping establish the idea of the French Riviera as a summer destination. Their remarkable circle included F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway and Pablo Picasso, and the hotel became part of the creative and social world that defined the Riviera between the wars.
