A vintage piece of Portuguese travel history.
You've checked into the Palácio Estoril, but figuring out exactly who else is staying here may be more interesting. European royalty passes through the lobby, well-dressed strangers hold discreet conversations at the bar, and not everyone is necessarily traveling under the occupation written in the hotel register. Portugal is neutral, Europe is at war, and sunny Estoril has become an unlikely crossroads for aristocrats, exiles, diplomats and spies. Keep your eyes open — there may be more happening around your cocktail than you realize.
Opened in 1930, the Palácio Estoril quickly became one of Portugal's great resort hotels. During World War II, Estoril became known as the “Coast of Kings” as exiled European royalty settled in the area, while British, German and French intelligence agents crossed paths at the hotel. That atmosphere of glamour and espionage became part of the Palácio's legend and 39 years later helped connect the hotel with the world of James Bond in On Her Majesty's Secret Service.
